I can build an HTML page from scratch, or customize a free Wordpress theme (as I did for this site). I’m not a coding expert, but I don’t need to be.

However, I have noticed a lot of enthusiasm for a “theme” that is a bit more, the THESIS website framework. The claim is that over 15,000 webmasters use it.

The price is $87 for one live website with one localized development server, and $164 for all the sites you own. If you set up sites for others, there is also a Client Site Option for $40, lower in quantities of 5 and 10.

I’ll be honest. I am not a grateful owner who is recommending the product from personal experience. However, the features do remind me of a prior attempt to find a configurable theme structure.

I have tried the free Atahualpa theme several times over different releases. It is designed to let the user pick and choose features like from a Chinese menu, 1 to 5 columns, left and/or right locations, header options, and so forth. Every time I have tried it I have deleted it, for these reasons.

1. Did not work exactly as claimed, and too much effort to debug.

2. Huge code, 10 to 20 times the size of others I have used. Very noticeable in the upload times.

I think Atahualpa is a marvelous creation, a labor of love, but I don’t have time for it.

The THESIS theme is made for non coders, but is also recommended by coders. It is a system, not just a template. It already deals with issues of SEO, accessibility, usability, and provides a flexible interface as a control panel to configure, style, customize. Also, THESIS has both a support staff and forum of users.

My regret is that THESIS was not around when I was getting started with website building.
