Wordpress is a fantastic system for building web pages, and is not limited to blogs. Not only is WP free, but it is made to take third party widgets, plugins, and themes.

But, WP has some hidden, undocumented problems. Here’s one I found, and how I fixed it.
The default setup, for any widget ready theme, includes at least one sidebar and the default “Blogroll”, now with 8[?] links. I decided to rename as “WP Resources”, drop some items, add some, move one to a page. Great!
A day or so later, I realized that the moved item was back on my renamed blogroll, so I deleted it. Next day it was back. In case my memory was not reliable about the deletions, I logged notes and deleted it two more times.
This sort of behavior is characteristic of a virus, not of a trustworthy software system. Totally not acceptable.
Among the standard widgets is “Links”, which one can place on the sidebar more than once. Each instance can be set to show just links of a chosen category. Those link categories can be defined on the Dashboard, and custom links can be flagged with one or more categories.
So I restored the name of “Blogroll”, created a link category of “WP Resources”, flagged those links I wanted with this new category, and assigned them to a copy of “Links” widget. Then I ripped everything out of “Blogroll” and dragged that widget off the sidebar.
I also made other instances of “Links” widget as “WP Gurus” and “Page List” for new links which I assigned to those categories.
That unwanted link on my sidebar has not come back.
